The City of Garland is proud to present the
2026 Juneteenth Ambassador Award to
Sims Chapel Missionary Baptist Church.
Sims Chapel Missionary Baptist Church holds the distinct honor as the oldest African-American church in Garland, Texas, paving the way for other churches, leaders, organizations, and the community.
Founded in 1915 with just nine faithful members, Sims Chapel began as a small gathering of believers with a big vision—to create a spiritual home, a place of refuge, and a foundation for hope. More than 110 years later, that vision still stands.
During a time when opportunities for African-American families were limited, Sims Chapel did more than hold worship services. The church opened its doors for education, hosting one of Garland’s earliest schools for Black children. It became a center for mentorship, fellowship, and community strength. Through seasons of segregation, social change, and growth in our city, Sims Chapel remained a steady light.
Its legacy is not only measured in years—but in lives changed, families strengthened, leaders nurtured, and a community empowered.
As we celebrate Juneteenth—a commemoration of freedom, resilience, and progress—Sims Chapel exemplifies those very values. Its enduring presence reflects faith in action, service beyond the sanctuary, and commitment to the betterment of Garland as a whole.
