NAACP Juneteenth Essay Contest

Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. Juneteenth, also known as Juneteenth Independence Day or Freedom Day, is a holiday that commemorates the June 19, 1865 announcement of the abolition of slavery in Galveston, Texas, more specifically the emancipation of enslaved Africans throughout the United States of America. This announcement came to Texas two full years after the Emancipation Proclamation.

Essay Requirements:
  • Utilize the following essay prompt and answer it in a well written format that conveys understanding of the topic with elaboration and explanation.
  • Your typed response should be a minimum of 500 words with 12-inch font.

Essay Prompt:
What is Juneteenth and what does it mean to you and your family? What does freedom and the American Dream mean to you?
