The Garland Parks and Recreation Department and the Society are hosting
An Evening with Moths
, with special guest Sam Kieschnick, the Urban Wildlife Biologist from Texas Parks and Wildlife. This event is coordinated with National Moth Week, a citizen-science event which celebrates the beauty, life cycles, and habitats of moths. Kids and other people of all ages will love this event.
This family-friendly activity is all about moths! Most moths are nocturnal, so we will have several light-sheets set up to attract moths that live in the Preserve. Experts will be on hand to answer questions and help with identification. Bring a magnifying glass if you have one, because many of these beautiful moths are very small.
The evening isn’t just about moths – many types of insects will be identified. All observations will be reported to iNaturalist, the citizen-science App that is run by National Geographic and the California Academy for Sciences. Last year, we reported over 1,400 observations, 360 species. Plus, we had a toad that was checking out the smorgasbord, 5 copperheads and one unidentified snake, a rabbit or two, and a loud frog chorus.
Come be a “Moth-er!”
