Downtown Garland Becomes a Celebration of Mexican Folk Art

Step into a world of vibrant imagination as Downtown Garland transforms into an outdoor gallery filled with larger-than-life alebrijes — brilliantly colored spirit creatures handcrafted by celebrated Mexican artists.

From October 8, 2026, through March 29, 2027, visitors are invited to experience an immersive cultural exhibition featuring monumental sculptures and whimsical spirit animals inspired by the rich tradition of Mexican cartonería, the art of papier-mâché sculpture.

Created by master artisans from Mexico City, these fantastical beings combine elements of animals, dreams, mythology, and imagination into breathtaking works of public art. The exhibition celebrates creativity, storytelling, cultural heritage, and community connection through an unforgettable visual experience.

What Are Alebrijes?

Alebrijes are brightly colored fantasy creatures rooted in the folk-art traditions of Mexico City. Originating from the visionary work of artist Pedro Linares, alebrijes blend mixtures of different animals into imaginative creatures that symbolize dreams, spirit guides, and creativity. Many are created through the traditional art form known as cartonería — a highly skilled papier-mâché technique deeply connected to Mexican culture.

Today, alebrijes are recognized worldwide for their vibrant colors, intricate patterns, and joyful expression of imagination and identity.

Enter the Alebrije Portal

Continue your journey at Garland’s Central Library, where the story and artistry behind the alebrijes come to life. The companion display will feature eight maquettes—miniature versions of the sculptures—along with framed concept sketches and panels introducing the artists who created these imaginative creatures.

Envisioned as the portal through which the alebrijes entered from the spirit world into Garland, the display offers a closer look at their journey from an artist’s original sketch to a monumental work of art.
