NEVER-BEFORE-SEEN FILM RELEASE OF "BECOMING GARLAND AVENUE" TO
REPLACE LIVE PERFORMANCE OF MUSICAL DRAMA ON NOVEMBER 14-15
Plans for the scheduled live performance of "Becoming Garland
Avenue—2020 Revival" musical drama, that had been on tap for 3 p.m. November 14-15
Plaza Theatre Downtown Garland,
are being transitioned to produce a never-before-seen film release to be shown
virtually in its place on those days.
The film, a composite of scenes from the national award-winning play's April
2019 sell-out performance plus some exciting new scenes, songs, and special
features, will be shown on the same dates the musical drama was to go live at
the Plaza in downtown Garland (November 14-15).
Concerns about audience and cast/crew members' health and safety during the
COVID-19 pandemic became the driving force behind the transition. The
sponsoring nonprofit, Friends of Garland's Historic Magic 11th Street, made the
decision because of the continued prevalence of COVID cases in the city and
region plus out of an abundance of caution about live musical performances on
On Saturday, November 14 at 3 p.m., a link to the film will be released to individuals
that had already purchased tickets to the play plus to members of the Friends
of Garland's Historic Magic 11th Street nonprofit. On Sunday, November 15 at 3 p.m., the
film will be released to the general public. Viewers may tune into the film
through this link.
The sponsoring organization is thrilled that it can now, as a community
service, make this quality film available to local citizens as well as to
friends and family that live remotely and to people who are confined due to
illness or quarantine as well to as other interested parties that might not be
able to view this outstanding production.
The live performance originally had been planned for Saturday, April 18, and
Sunday, April 19, 2020, but several weeks before showtime at the Plaza was shut
down due to health concerns regarding the coronavirus and pushed forward to
Saturday, November 14, and Sunday, November 15. Patrons who chose to do so were
asked to hold on to their tickets, instructing that these tickets would be
valid on the corresponding performance dates in the fall.
Since the live play will now not be shown on stage as planned, Friends of Garland's
Historic Magic 11th Street will cheerfully issue a full refund to any
ticketholder that desires. However, patrons also may donate the ticket price to
the nonprofit if they wish. For ticket refund questions or any other inquiries
The drama, with a 36-member cast, features a totally original script and
musical score. It focuses on life in Garland in 1913, after Garland was
incorporated from two side-by-side communities, Embree and Duck Creek. Garland leaders
during that time will be depicted. Garland Avenue is the original name for
present-day 11th Street, the heart of the Travis College Hill National Register
In the film to be released November 14-15, the two new original songs,
"A House United" and "Just Good People", plus the two new
scenes planned for 2020 performance will be videoed at the Plaza and
incorporated into the never-before-seen film.
