Premiere Screening: A People's History of Rainbow Estates

Date: Feb 28, 2019
“The People’s History of Rainbow Estates” is a short documentary of the first black neighborhood in Garland, TX. This film traces the stories of ordinary African Americans coming of age in the Jim Crow South as they pursued their version of the American dream and now reflect on their hopes for the next generation of residents who will live in “The Rainbow”.

This film was sponsored by The City of Garland, TX and produced by Ash Studios. The film was shot by Christian Vasquez and Dom G. Jones and edited by Dom G. Jones. In addition to this film, Ash Studios is designing and fabricating an entryway sculpture for The Rainbow Estates neighborhood.

Ash Studios is a social sculpture which takes the form of a black/latinx cultural space and art collective located near Fair Park in Dallas, TX. Cofounded in 2012 by artists Darryl Ratcliff and Fred Villanueva, this 22,000 square foot artist owned space has collaborated with over 1,000 artists of color and hosted over 35,000 people from communities of color to experience art. In 2016 Ash Studios won Best Gallery or Arts Space from D Magazine, and in 2017 Ash Studios presented at Common Field's national convening in Los Angeles on the topic of "Radical Openness".
